Massive 7.4 magnitude earthquake rocks New Zealand and sparks a tsunami warning  

  • A 7.4 magnitude earthquake has struck north-east of New Zealand on Friday 
  • The quake hit at a depth of about 33 kilometres, south of the Kermadec Islands 
  • There is no tsunami threat to New Zealand following the massive earthquake
  • However, tsunami waves are possible within 300km of the epicentre 
  • 300km of the epicentre  

A 7.4 magnitude earthquake has struck north-east of New Zealand.null

The quake hit at a depth of about 33 kilometres, south of the Kermadec Islands.

‘Hazardous tsunami waves from this earthquake are possible within 300km of the epicentre,’ the UNESCO/IOC Pacific Tsunami warning and mitigation system said.

New Zealand National Emergency Management Agency warned that coastal areas may experience strong and unusual currents and unpredictable surges at the shore.
